After an investment banking career focused first on restructurings and then on cross-border derivatives, David R. Bechtel moved on to serve as Head of Finance, Head of New Product Development, and Senior Investment Committee member at SunAmerica, an S&P500 financial services company with a $50bn balance sheet; Global Head of Outsourced Proprietary Trading at Bank of America, a $2bn hedged high frequency equities and derivatives investment portfolio; and a Partner at Oak Hill, a private equity firm.  With kind support from the Robert Bass Organization, he launched Outpost in 2001 and has been investing as an active partner in alternatives ever since, employing a barbell portfolio construction strategy specializing in dirt (farmland, water rights, oil & gas, aggregates) and digits (early stage fintech, insurance, blockchain, and consumer brands).

Other career highlights include: Independent Director & Audit Chair INDUS Realty Trust ("INDT," taken private 2023), co-founder Uphold Ltd. ($8bn payments and digital asset platform), co-founder GP Resources (Western US water rights and farmland), co-founder Senior Life Managers (private insurance fund), co-founder Cloudbreak Brands, and Senior Advisor to various blockchain ventures.
